How to import a local file

Filed under: How To — johnsimp @ 8:09 am

This is the best method for getting music into the songbook. This gives you the ability to make any format changes before the songs get imported. (NOTE: this only works on the desktop version. For mobile devices, use the desktop version and then sync to your mobile device.) Here are the steps that you will performing.

  1. Convert to a simple text file
  2. Make any formatting changes (optional)
  3. Remove imported category (optional)
  4. Go to the New Screen
  5. Pick the file
  6. Watch it import
  7. View the imported songs (optional)

I know this seems long and complicated, but it’s actually quite easy. All these steps are here for completeness, it is likely you won’t need to do anything for most of these steps.

1. Convert to a simple text file
Before you can import a local file, you need to make sure it doesn’t contain any special markup. I used to keep all of my songs in a Word document. However it is stored, it needs to just be plain text, or you will get lots of funny symbols all through out your songs.

2. Make any formatting changes (optional)
This is your chance to correct things on a large scale. You can do this within the application, but remember the application is not a multi-purpose text editor. If you want to do a find and replace, now is the time to do it.
One quick mention, the application is built so that you can import multiple songs at once. It looks for 6 (or 3 depending on your OS) new line characters between each song. So if you have two songs in the file, make sure there is at least 6 empty lines between each song.

3. Remove imported category (optional)
When you are done importing songs, it is nice if you can view only the newly imported songs. This is possible, but you need to clear the previously imported songs. This uses the category feature. You can create a category and apply it to different songs. When a song is imported it is automatically added to the “imported” category. (If there is no imported category, it is created.)
To clear this, open up a song (it can be any song). Edit the song and select the category field. A list of categories will be displayed. Select the “imported” category and delete it. Now nothing belongs to the imported category. After you import your songs only those songs will belong to this category.

4. Go to the New Screen
To import songs, you need to be on the New Screen. Just press the button.

5. Pick the file
Press the “Browse Files” button. Using the OS file browser, pick the file with the song(s).

6. Watch it import
Sit back and watch. First the file is read to find songs, then each song is processed. You can watch the progress of importing songs.

7. View the imported songs (optional)
After your songs are imported you might want to view the songs that were added. Go to the Find screen to view all the songs. Then filter the songs by the “imported” category. This will narrow the list of songs to the ones imported.
